| Finally Oprah gives me something I can use! |
Usually when I'm able to catch Ms. Winfrey, I'm stuck watching some insipid celebrity interview lovefest. Today, though, I may have actually learned something.
The topic of the show today was "Amazing Medical Breakthroughs" -- and the first segment of the show was about "The Secret Language of Babies." There is an Australian woman, Priscilla Dunstan, who has deciphered five sounds babies make to communicate their needs:
- Neh="I'm hungry"
- Owh="I'm sleepy"
- Heh="I'm experiencing discomfort"
- Eair="I have lower gas"
- Eh="I need to burp"
She's tested these sounds on thousands of babies, all over the world -- and she may be onto something with her theory. Oprah had a gathering of young moms on her show that tested the theory with Dunstan, and all of them were fairly amazed at the results of deciphering the cries.
Granted, I'm not looking to stifle my kid when he/she shows up, but it may be useful to try to understand more about the needs of my little one before he/she is able to tell me with words. Dunstan's book/dvd ("Dunstan Baby Language") is coming out later this month, and I may just have to check it out.
Watch the trailer for the show here (or read about it here).
EDIT: Apparently you can buy the DVD on November 27th from dunstanbaby.com. Right now, though, the website isn't up. Talk about lost opportunity -- I'm sure there are thousands of people looking to preorder! |
